Global Warming and People in Denial
By Richard Komp
WTS (Wishful Thinker Syndrome) is alive and well in the financial industry. The scientific evidence for global warming and the fact that its major cause is our burning fossil fuels is extremely solid and no competent scientists are denying this anymore. However, the Carbon Establishment is still pretending that there is still a big question involving global warming and what causes it.
Global warming deniers have a four step argument:
1. Global warming is not real, it is just a liberal myth (Usually following an ad hominum argument).
2. Global warming is real but is a natural cyclic phenomenon, not caused by us.
3. Global warming is caused by us but it will be a good thing, making plants grow better and stopping burning fossil fuels will cut CO2 emissions, which will eventually hurt farmers. In any event, it is too early to worry about global warming.
4. Global warming is going to be a bad thing and will do us a lot of harm, but it is too late to do anything about it. We and Mother Earth should just lay back and enjoy it since it will happen to us no matter what we do.
Notice that each step contradicts the previous step; but for people in denial, logic is not a strong point. The problem is that financial news services need to give unbiased information so that their clients can have correct knowledge when making decisions. These attempts to deny reality do them a disservice.
