Broccoli Extract Protects Against Damage from UV Radiation

By Katie Bird

10/23/2007- Topical application of broccoli extract may protect against damage caused by UV radiation by stimulating the cell’s own protective mechanism, according to latest research.

The team, led by Paul Talalay, from the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, found that topical application of the extract significantly reduced UV damage by an average of 37.7 per cent.

The important chemical in the extract is sulforaphane, which differs from conventional sunscreens as it does not absorb the UV rays. Instead its protective qualities lie in its ability to upregulate the cells’ own defenses against UV damage.
