WHAT COULD BE MORE NATURAL THAN A BABY?

Apparently not the products most of us are putting on our babies.
A new study by Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) tested several of the best known baby personal care products for the carcinogens formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.

According to the study, 82 percent of the products studied contained at least 54 parts per million of formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane – a level the CSC describes as ‘high’. Of the 28 products, which were chosen to be likely candidates for containing the chemical, 23 contained between 54 and 610 ppm of formaldehyde.

As a result of the findings, Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble and Kimberley Clark are among a number of leading baby personal care manufacturers being taken to court in a class-action law suit filed by Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro (HBSS) on March 19 in the District Court of Chicago. The suit was filed on behalf of “parents or other consumers who purchased any of an extensive list of products”.

The Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) called the study a cynical attempt to prey upon concerned parents. The PCPC claims the CSC has falsely attempted to create the impression the report is scientifically sound. A PCPC spokesperson further responded by saying 1,4 dioxane is not an ingredient in cosmetics products but a by-product created from the manufacture of certain detergent and solvent ingredients.

The US FDA and the Cosmetic Ingredients Review Expert Panel state that formaldehyde in cosmetics and personal care products is safe when not exceeding 2,000 ppm, the same level listed in current European regulation.

We at Vashon Organics believe no matter what the level or what the excuse, no amount of formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane is acceptable in baby personal care products. It should be just that simple. And it is – at Vashon Organics.
